Another Love The Way Review

Here's a snippet...

"Marc Ellerby’s panel constructions are very manga, but his figure work is squarely in the tradition of American cartooning. This gives his illustrations a puckish, humorous quality that engages both the eye and our sense of who and what his characters are. And for all the whimsy and anti-gravity hair, the tone of the artwork doesn’t overshadow the serious aspects of Rich’s script, as Ellerby captures his characters’ emotions quite well. He does just as well with conveying their ages, portraying them as young adults who don’t look like teenagers. This gives his characters a more mature affect than his style would suggest. With subtleties like this, the reader sometimes sees Ellerby’s images struggling with the rough patches in Rich’s script. There’s room for improvement, but right now Ellerby is a more developed artist than Rich is a writer, and it shows."

Jamie's spoken about this on his blog to some extent and I totally agree with what Jamie's saying. We either get universally slated or there's a love for one and not the other and in some cases we're admired across the board. Which, is interesting to say the least. Some reviews have been quite extreme too, with some quite vicious words for my art, but at the end of the day, the critics (if you can call some of them that, most are just "bloggers" by the look of things) have their world and we as artists have ours. I'm sort of glad I've gotten some awful reviews out of my system and they've made me a little bit more confident in my abilities (after the inital "everyone hates me, sob" melt down) and at the end of the day I take their criticism and if I agree, learn from it, if I don't, then, frankly, they can fuck right off. I do think that LTWYL finds it's stride with perhaps the second issue and the third one possibly has the best work I've ever done on it (I said that about #2 at the time, so hopefully this is going somewhere...) so don't give up yet, folks ;)

The book's finding an audience with women, what with the majority of the feedback I'm getting coming from women. However all the reviews we've had have come from men and mmmmm, the book maybe isn't aimed at them. Don't get me wrong, I think if you like romance books or shows or whatever than you'll find something from this book and of course it doesn't matter what sex you are, but I think the ones who are going to get the most from it are going to be women. Especially #3. When Franz Ferdinand first came about their decliration was that they wanted to make "music for girls to dance to," and well, I've always wanted to make comics for girls to obsess over. Girls reading comics is possibly the best thing ever, right?

I'm pretty much now over the 1/2 mark with the art for #3 and #2 has gone into production.

Here's some pages as I hardly ever show art on here, I guess. These are from #2...

You need to check your blacks - the dude's t-shirt isn't as dark as the ramones logo you've put on it, so you can see the square around it.

I get weird reviews too. My art will get blasted by one person, then praised by another... and they'll be talking about the same book. It's obvious that a lot of "critics" are just people who get paid to give their opinion.

And you know what they say about opinions....

Anyway, I'm glad you're doing so well and if you're happy with the work, then you win.

The end.

thanks zach, i find that most critics are bloggers, (or at least the ones commenting on my book at least, i can only half assume it's the same for you) since when was the line so thin? i know everyone has their right to an opinion, but just because you have a livejournal/blog doesn't automatically make you a critic. make some valid points, say something of note!

but as you say, if we're happy with our work, then that's what matters. well...that and our editors...and our publishers...*ahem*...

More power to ya!

However, the second panel on the third page looks really off, the sudden change of camera angle feels really wierd.

I like the first page alot.

well i think it leads nicely into tristan looking up at the stars in the third panel. the above shot highlights that he's looking towards something and for the third panel we swoop down to his shoulder shot to see what he's looking at. i take what you're saying and yeah as i said, everyone's got their opinion.

i like the first page too, cheers man.

I had marked the Ramones T-shirt to bring up to James, actually. It printed out that way yesterday when I made new copies to look over. I also don't agree with the fella about the camera angle change on Tristan. I think it works great.

I *do* agree with everything else you say. I definitely think about the criticism, try to imagine how it applies, and take something for myself if it's there. I can't actually understand the whole "it opens slow" routine. I don't know what exactly is wrong with opening in a way where we get to know where we are and who we are with. What should have been there?

Most likely, I'm going to continue to take hits for the way it's scripted, because it will continue to be a soap opera. I won't apologize for that. You and I are, I think, doing exactly what we set out to do, and eventually, it will all come out in the wash.

Issue #2 is awesome, by the way. Reading it again, I was reminded of just how good you are doing. I love the way you draw. :) - Jamie

yeah i re-checked everypage and there was about 30 or so pages where the black wasn't black. i can't work out what happened, i asked around and my answer was essentially "yeah photoshop does that sometimes..." since WHEN?! Mental note to remember that...

the thing is, i guess people aren't used to the page length, it's half way between a comic and a graphic novel, when it's 22 pages long, you have to get in there quick, set everything up and then get on with it, but with a graphic novel you've got time to simmer, you can have 60 pages setting up the other 120, because you're reading it in one go and there's no real need for building up to a cliffhanger, which the 22p comic does. as we're a mixture of the two, we have to give and take from each. there's only about 3 other books like ours on the market in the same format and they're obviously all from oni, so it's not like the market, or perhaps, readers are used to it. some just don't know what to do with it.

if and when the book's collected, then i think people will realise that it all makes sense, what we're trying to do (and i agree we are hitting all our marks) and how it all came together. reading back issue 2 makes issue 1 stronger and i believe when 3's in the can, we'll have an excellent package on our hands.

at the end of the day, these guys that rag on us won't touch our book again and i couldn't care less, because if they're dissing us in one paragraph and going on about how excellent john bryne's new comic is in the next and 95% of their reviews are based on the big two publishers, then why are they reading a romance book in the first place?

that perhaps should of been an email...
