The Venal Muse

I drew this in late 2006, but I think it eventually came out around February 2007. It was to tie in with an exhibition of the same name that my friend John was putting on in Brick Lane - I thought the show was great, mainly because old friends were reunited and as a force we kicked some arty arse. Dev from Lightspeed Champion stopped by. I stressed out thinking that I was a massive failure and I'm pretty sure my ex girlfriend Sarah came too and I freaked out about that too.

Anyway, this comic is about an other ex girlfriend of mine, Holly. You can explore this journal for embarrassing, lovey dovey, angsty entries about her but I really wouldn't if I were you. I thought for a long time that I only really made decent work when it was about or for her. That she somehow had this control over my artist abilities, that everything I created, I wanted to make for her approval. It was a weird time, like she broke up with me before I started this and it was obvious to everyone that she had treated me wrong and I couldn't let go but for me I still saw so much in her. I'm much wiser now though (well...maybe not wiser)

I really like this comic, it's a bit flat in places and maybe doesn't hit the right notes, but I still think it holds it's own a year on. I made it into a mini comic and it's sold out now (there might be a few copies at Dave's Comics in Brighton...) so I present to you the first mini I ever made and sold in it's entirety. A couple of hundred are out there in the world and I hope everyone enjoyed them.

Lemme know what you think and feel free to spread this link around.

Enjoy!

Hi there,

I just wanted to say that I really loved reading this comic. The artwork and the storytelling is fantastic, and on top of that really quite poignant in comparison to my own life at the moment!

I work at Forbidden Planet and always try to put "Love The Way You Love" face out so that people buy it quicker, and will definitely continue doing so after reading this. :)

Hey Julia,

That's great, thank you for the support. I do venture to FP sometimes and I'm slightly shocked to see LTWYL stocked at all and it's always quite prominent, so I guess I have you to thank :D

hey mark,

i really enoyed this. it's a great little narrative. you pull off the analitical sense of the comic without coming off as heavy handed! it's a nice read, thanks for posting.

Wow, Hi Becky. Thanks ever so much. I guess I never wanted to be overbearing with this comic, like it could have been me moping around so much but I think I got the balance right.

Very much looking to Demo 2. Thanks again :D

Free comics! Pity it's sold out now, I wish I'd bought a copy when I had the chance! (though Ellerbisms is perhaps the first time my girlfriend actually picked up a comic without me having to nudge her towards it, so in a way I'm glad I got that instead ;-)

Also, Pixies = awesome. As I may have raved slightly to you in the bar at Bristol, if I had a religion, it would be PIXIES.

Did I tell you about my next thing I'm doing where the main character shouts Pixies lyrics while fighting monsters? It's going to be SWEET.

That's also great about your girlfriend picking up Bisms. Girls reading comics = not impossible!

You did tell us about this, and I seem to recall the pair of us heartily approving ;-)

Anyway, this was great. Next time I'm in Dave's (probably Saturday), I'll have to see if they do in fact have any left in.

I remember one of my own Muse moments, in the This Will Move Her!!! manner.

It was a game review. "This'll show her what she's missing!"

I am not clevers.

"This Will Move Her!!!" Haha, that's exactly what it's like.

Did she see?? It totally worked, right?

There are many ways to impress women. Games reviews are not among their number.

It worked on pretty much everyone else other than her though, so win.

I know it sounds cheesy but remind me of a cross between scott mccloud and a young jamie hewlett, even though it's distincly a style that's all you .

Got a website?
Got an online store?
Is the comic still availbe to buy anywhere in dead tree format?
