I Went Away
Photobucket

I've written and drawn a 14 page comic called "I Went Away" in the new Image anthology "This Is A Souvenir". The idea of the anthology is that the comics are based on songs by the band Spearmint and their songwriter Shirley Lee, much like their Tori Amos and Belle & Sebastian anthologies. The only thing is, not that many people have actually heard of Spearmint and I must admit to being one of them. I popped into Gosh yesterday and chatted to a clerk and they're all convinced that Spearmint don't actually exist and they're made up. Which, sounds like something Matt Sheret would put together - an anthology based on song lyrics by a band that doesn't actually exist.

Anyway, this stuff's kinda seven months old. To me, it looks dated already but to you it might still look Ellerby enough to be enjoyed. Regardless of which, there are some other people I quite like in there, like Chynna Glugston, Jamie S. Rich and (ugh) the Phonogram boys, so it is worth a look even if you don't know anything about the band.

I'm really liking the pacing and the flashbacks in this. I'm also liking everything else in it.

That's a really nice background in the last frame. Looks like it must have taken ages!

Mmm, not too long to draw. The colouring wsa the hardest thing about it (colouring in bricks, sadly, isn't easy)

Oh thank you. Yes, I wanted the colouring to seperate different moods and time lines to reinforce the flashback aspects.
There are more colour Ellerby comics on their way :)

We got back from Toronto (so not technically "stateside") a few weeks ago, so not till next year. I'm eyeing up Stumptown or maybe SPX?

I've heard some great things about stumptown, I am definitely considering going next year! I love SPX, and I go every year, so I can definitely vouch for the awesomeness of that con!

Colouring is superb all over here. Especially like the sky when they're chatting on the grass.

Getting a hint of Venal Muse to the story. Will have to give the whole thing a proper read when it's out.

I started considering writing more "Zubies" (my somewhat autobiographical thing)

But I'm not sure how many people wanna hear about how I'd make gay clones of myself for my gay friends.

Everyone loves gay comic antics, me boy.

Maybe just do them for yourself and then see if they're good enough and just post them on LJ? Or do them as friends only post or something? I wish to god the first year of Ellerbisms was never shown - they're so gash.

Excellent so far, Mr Marc. I really should get this.

As for Spearmint, they hired me to play extra guitar for about a year, 1999-2000, concerts only. Oh, and one little appearance in a video. Thanks to them, I went to places I'd never been before: Tokyo, Oasaka, Nagoya, Oslo, Stockholm (and a whole Swedish tour), Copenhagen, Middlesbrough... In Japan they had a big HMV signing as well. Their single 'Sweeping The Nation' was voted Best Pop Record All Of All Time by a Swedish magazine. So they definitely have a passionate following.
